What this end of the bay actually runs on
The mix down here is genuinely different from the rest of the metro, and it changes what’s worth building.
Anything touching the water
Boat repair and detailing, marine electronics, dock and bulkhead builders, canvas and upholstery shops, brokerage and charter. Clear Lake holds one of the largest concentrations of recreational boats in the country, and the businesses serving it run on estimates that are hard to standardise because every boat is a one-off. That’s exactly the case where loading in your own past estimates pays off, because the pricing logic lives in your head and nowhere else.
Aerospace and engineering subcontractors
The Clear Lake and Webster side has a deep bench of small technical firms working around Johnson Space Center. Different problem entirely: proposal writing, statements of work, capability statements, and the endless past-performance narratives that go into a bid package. Writing-heavy, deadline-driven, and usually done by the one person who can’t afford the time.
Remodelers and restoration crews
Housing here is older than Katy or Pearland, so the work skews to repair and remodel rather than new build. And there’s the thing nobody south of I-45 needs explained: when a storm comes through, restoration companies go from normal to underwater in about six hours. The build that matters is the one that lets three people triage two hundred inbound messages without anybody being forgotten.
Kemah and Seabrook hospitality
Waterfront restaurants, charter operators, event and wedding venues. Seasonal, inquiry-heavy, and losing bookings to whoever replies first on a Saturday.
League City questions
Do you actually know this area or is that just marketing?
I hauled out of it this week. I know which streets in Clear Creek flood, I know what Galveston County permitting is like, and I know what the drive to Kemah is on a Saturday in July.
More usefully: I’ve lost jobs to slow quotes in this exact market, which is the entire reason this business exists. That’s not a positioning statement, it’s just what happened.
What happens if a storm hits the week you’re booked?
Then you’re busy and I’m busy, because H&L runs hard after weather. We’d move the day, and I wouldn’t charge you for moving it. I’d rather say that now than pretend I’ll be sitting by the phone during a hurricane response.
The flip side is that a restoration or hauling business that got its follow-up system set up before a storm is the one that doesn’t lose half its inbound during it.
My people have been here twenty years and hate new software.
That’s the most common situation in this area and it’s not actually a technology problem. Long-tenured staff aren’t resistant because they can’t learn it, they’re resistant because they’ve watched three systems get bought and abandoned and they’re not doing it again.
What works is building something for one specific person’s worst task, with them typing, and letting them see it work once. I don’t do group lectures and I don’t ask anyone to change how they work.
Being local cuts both ways. You'll run into me at Kroger, and I have to live with whether this worked. That's a real reason to take a local job seriously, and it's the main reason I'd rather tell you not to buy than sell you a day you didn't need.
